Barry is a Senior Manager at SANEDI, responsible for the energy efficiency portfolio. He has worked in the distribution, customer service, marketing and Demand Side Management (DSM) areas of the national electricity utility in South Africa (Eskom) for a period of 27 years. While at Eskom he helped develop and implement the Eskom and Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded, Efficient Lighting Initiative (ELI) which set the scene for the current roll-out of efficient lighting in the country. Barry is acclaimed locally and internationally for contributions to the rapid market transformation to efficient lighting in South Africa and presents papers on energy efficiency at various conferences, both locally and internationally. He also represents South Africa on various multi-lateral working groups, working towards an accelerated transition towards a global low-carbon society. Barry is a former President of the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA), the Southern African affiliate of the International Solar Energy Society, (ISES) and has served on various committees of the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa, (IESSA) and Technical Committees of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). More recently, Barry has played a leading rolein the development and implementation of energy efficiency related tax incentives, together with the South African departments of Energy (DoE), Trade and Industry (dti) and Finance and continues to be recognised for his contribution to energy efficiency in South Africa.
